Swimming coach Jan Krekel and Gymnast Lee Dockins were named Special Olympics Kentucky Coach and Athlete of the Year, respectively at a ceremony held during lunch at the Special Olympics Leadership Conference on March 1.
Krekel who has been a Special Olympics volunteer for more than 25 years was one of eight Kentucky coaches who was selected to the coaching staff of Team USA for the 2007 World Summer Games in Shanghai, China. Krekel helped coach a team that enjoyed tremendous success at those Games.
In addition the Spencer County resident has been instrumental in helping to produce training materials for other Aquatics coaches, especially regarding the developmental Aquatics events.

Dockins, from Russellville, was also a 2007 World Games participant. She won three medals, including two Golds at the Games. Dockins also completed Global Messenger training in 2007, learning public speaking skills.
It has actually been a very eventful two-year stretch for both Krekel and Dockins. Both were also part of Team Kentucky for the 2006 Special Olympics USA National Games.
