Grateful Threads Makes Scarf Donation

Church Group Drops off 37 Scarves for 2012 Scarf Project
Grateful Threads
The women of the Grateful Threads knitting and crocheting club at Jeffersontown Christian Church modeled some of their handiwork when they stopped at the SOKY office.

We don't generally get a whole lot of visitors at the state office in Frankfort, so you can imagine our surprise when the Grateful Threads knitting and crocheting club stopped by to drop off 37 scarves for athletes, coaches and family members participating in the upcoming 2012 State Winter Games. The group operates out of Jeffersontown Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Louisville and has a long history of using their talents to benefit good causes. Among other things, they have knitted and crocheted hats and booties for premature babies at Kosair Children's Hospital.

The donation is just the latest in what has been an amazing response to the 2012 Special Olympics Scarf Project. The project seeks to promote unity by providing similar scarves to all participants at Special Olympics Winter Games and it got its start at the 2009 World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho. This is the first year Kentucky has participated in the project and the response has far exceeded our expectations.

Grateful Threads
Just a few of the hundreds of scarves that have poured
into the Special Olympics Kentucky office ready to head
off to the State Winter Games.

We set a goal of receiving 285 scarves, which would cover everyone at our State Games. Instead, the Grateful Threads donation brings the total to 629 scarves contributed with one day left to go before we pack off to the Winter Games. Rest assured that those extra scarves will not go to waste. We will send them to other states which have a need for a much larger number, so Kentucky volunteers will help brighten the Winter Games experience of athletes, coaches and family members throughout the country.

With such a tremendous response, we are sure to participate in the 2013 Scarf Project. Be on the lookout in October for information about next year's thread colors and deadline dates, then get those needles moving! You can also subscribe to the SportsLine E-Newsletter to get news on the project as soon as it becomes available. For more information, contact Brittany Abell at 502-695-8222 or babell@soky.org.
