Kentucky World Games Athletes In Bed Races

Special Olympics World Games Athletes Taste Another Kind of Competition

Four of the 16 Special Olympics Kentucky athletes who will be Traveling to Shanghai, China, to compete in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games got an early taste of the roar of the crowd, but in an entirely different kind of area as they took part in the Kentucky Derby Festival Bed Races that were held on Monday, April 30 at Broadbent Arena in Louisville. The Bed Races are part of the Annual Kentucky Derby Festival that leads up to the most famous horse race in the world.

The Special Olympics Kentucky entry was backed by Long-time Special Olympics supporter LINAK which donated the bed the team raced and provided the team's entry fee. World Games athletes Andrew Browning (bowling), Kyle Gathof (aquatics), Jessica Haggerty (bowling) and Matthew Minning (athletics) provided the "horse" power for the bed and Special Olympics Kentucky Executive Vice President and World Games Team USA Manager Trish Mazzoni will served as the "jockey".

All of the beds in the contest had elaborate decorations and the Special Olympics entry was no different. Adapting the "Bednobs and Broomsticks" theme of the 2007 Bed Races, the Special Olympics entry was called "Bednobs and Chopsticks" and evoked images of the country that will host the 2007 World Summer Games in October.

LINAK wasn't the only friend of the program that Special Olympics ran into during the event. In their heat, the Special Olympics athletes were paired with the team from Print Tex USA, which produces many of the T-shirts used at Special Olympics fundraising events, as well as all of the Law Enforcement TOrch Run T-shirts.

Special Olympics jumped out to an early lead in the heat, but was unable to hold off the charging Print Tex-ers in the end.

Our thanks to LINAK for thinking of Special Olympics and our World Games athletes when they had a spare bed around after building a new racing bed for this year. The 2007 Kentucky Derby Festival Bed Races were a tremendous experience for everybody involved.
