Central Kentucky back roads were packed with motorcycles on Saturday, August 1, as a perfect day for riding brought out nearly 500 bikers to take part in the 2009 Ride to Win for Special Olympics Kentucky. In its ninth year the Ride to Win has become one of the largest motorcycle events in Central Kentucky and this year was no different as riders from throughout the region turned out to help raise more than $28,000 to support Special Olympics athletes in the state.

As they have for the past three years, riders began the day in Richmond at the home of the Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games, Eastern Kentucky University. Once signed in, riders made their way to Burgin for a poker stop at The Kickstand which was manned by team members of the Ride to Win's newest sponsor, Pliant Corporation in Danville. Later there were stops at Kroger stores in Nicholasville and Versailles before riders rolled into Man O War Harley-Davidson in Lexington for the post-ride festivities.

CEO Dave Kerchner.

For the ninth time in as many years, Lowell King of Hustonville was the event's top fundraiser. This year King raised $3,551 for the event. In his nine years of involvement with the Ride to WIn, King has raised well over $25,000 for the organization.

There was a spirited competition this year for the Chapter Challenge Award that goes to the group with the most riders. After dominating the award for the first few years of the event, the Lexington Harley Owners Group (HOG) Chapter had given way to the American Legion Riders. This year, however the HOG Chapter reclaimed the title with 65 riders raising more than $1,500, The Legion Riders had 46 members ride, raising $1,160. Our thanks to both groups for the fantastic turnout.

Poker hand winners were also announced with Randy Scott of Randolph Scott insurance once again presenting the winners the prize money contributed by the company. This year three straights, all to the queen, held up most of the day, but a late flurry ran those off the board. Full houses took first and second prize, with Danny Huges' aces over sixes beating out Eddie Stephenson's kings over 10s. Randy Roberts took third with an ace-high flush. Timothy Riddell won $25 for posting the worst hand of the day. A seven high to go with a six, four, three and two. Hughes donated the $200 he won in the poker drawing back to Special Olympics as soon as it was presented to him.

The biggest draw of the day though came when Special Olympics Kentucky athlete Levi Collins reached into the hoper to pull out the winning ticket in the 2009 Special Olympics Kentucky Harley Raffle. This year the winner was Danny White of Harrodsburg who was thrilled with his brand new Harley-Davidson Super Glide Custom. You can click on the Harley Raffle page for more information.

Combined, the 2009 Ride to WIn and Harley Raffle raised nearly $70,000 for Special Olympics. Our sincere thanks to everyone who made the effort to make these two events such a success.
