Spread the Word to End the Word
Help Stop the "R-Word"
Spread the Word
Students at Bryan Station High School decorated classroom doors as part of Spread the Word to End the Word Day at their school.

Pledge your support to eliminate the demeaning use of the R-word.

Spread the Word to End the Word is an on-going youth driven campaign to raise the consciousness of society about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the word “retard(ed)” and encourage people to pledge to stop using the R-word. The campaign is intended to get schools, communities and organizations to rally and pledge their support.

It is time we Spread the Word to End the Word™ and build awareness for society to stop and think about its’ use of the R-word. That R-word is something hurtful and painful.   Most people don’t think of this word as hate speech, but that’s exactly what it feels like to millions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and friends. The R-word is just as cruel and offensive as any other slur.

Students can create posters about acceptance, respect, taking the pledge. Each classroom can work as a team to come up with a theme for their door that encourages people to take the pledge not to use the r-word.

Please ask us how your school can help change the conversation to help eliminate the demeaning use of the R-word!

Please contact Brittany Abell at 800-633-7403 or babell@soky.org to bring the r-word campaign to your school!
